With the final free project, I plan to do a self portrait, or series of self portraits, using contours of myself in a way to portray some form of simultaneity of myself.  I have forms of my face, but may work with full figure, or hands, or hands interaction with faces as well.

  1. I think that including hands is a good idea instead of just face portraits. Maybe do a whole figure but more defined contour lines in certain areas like the face and hands?

  2. I'm also doing a play off of self portraits so I'm interested to see where you'll take this. I'm not sold on the idea of simple forms of your face, but it could be much more interesting as you move forward.

  3. It will be interesting to see what you do with these drawings. I would make sure not to turn the pieces into a sheet of a character's expressions though. I think you have a nice point of departure already and I'm sure you will figure it out

  4. I enjoy the use of contour lines. I think the image would be more interesting if you continued and created the figure using the lines.

  5. Adding your hands will give you more options in composition and emotion. The contour lines are great, but I would like to see some line variation throughout the face.

  6. I like the contour lines of these drawings. Maybe create some variation to really emphasize the simultaneity such as in line thickness and quality. Will you use color and texture?

  7. Cool Idea, how will you combine them, will it be almost creating fairly normal figure and abstracting it (i.e. Nude Descending a Staircase, maybe not even that abstracted) or combining the shapes all over the canvas? I think you could do something interesting also coloring in intersections between the lines with all different colors.

  8. I like the idea of using contour lines but I do think you'll need to use more than just your face. I think maybe if you could do like a full body image that'd be a lot more interesting.

  9. Since what you have here is all line work it would be interesting if you incorporated even more line in the final image. I can't quite imagine what the final piece would look like, but its something to consider. I also believe that some experimentation with other parts of your body, such as legs and hands would help. If they dont work with your idea then just throw them out.

  10. Interesting concept. Maybe have the contour lines and some aspect of your self represented in each individual view of yourself. Otherwise I think it may end up being too simple.

  11. Hi Matt

From the looks of things it looks like you're going to be doing a drawing, and then using Photoshop to manipulate the image. Some challenges with a self-portrait are number one what does it mean, And then number two being objective. That is to say how can you be objective about your own image. I think of what Rembrandt was trying to achieve his self-portraits. Using light and chiaroscuro to imply emotion? What are you trying to say With a self-portrait.

  12. Are you planning on using only drawn elements to create this self portrait or will there be photographic elements as well? Im responding positively to the contour drawings you posted so far but I'm having a hard time seeing where you plan on taking this project.
